Why should you become a nurse?

With healthcare being one of the fastest growing professions all over the world, the demand for nurses is also on the rise. Going by the recent trends, the demand can only grow in the near future. As many nurses at present are on the verge of retirement, the shortage of nurses will become more acute causing a significant rise in their salaries. In addition to salaries, many facilities are now offering nurses sign-on bonuses and attractive packages including cars, childcare and/or eldercare assistance, and housing assistance. More importantly, nurses have this great feeling of caring for others and making a difference to their lives that is no less rewarding than all the financial benefits added together.

In a recent trend, many people with degrees in other disciplines are now also getting themselves enrolled in nursing programs for a second degree. In nursing, many schools are now offering a crash course of 12-18 months. Another interesting point is that nursing is no longer the sole preserve of women. Men are now taking to nursing in growing numbers. They are perhaps being attracted by the rise in salaries and job security that is lacking in other fields. Overcoming initial resistance from patients, men are slowly being accepted as nurses.

The growing demand for nurses has also forced employers to offer them alternative and flexible working conditions. Flexible work schedules and job sharing opportunities are helping nurses meet the demands of their families while pursuing a successful career.

Workplaces of nurses are not confined to hospitals and clinics only; they can also work in physician's offices, schools, private duty and home health. They can also work as consultants and lawyers for insurance companies, and as clinical researchers, and sales reps for drug companies and medical equipment firms. Occupational nurses are found working in various industries all across the world. Nursing is a constantly emerging profession with newer vistas opening up on a regular basis. There is no reason why you shouldn’t choose it as your career.
